The story of Bunny Gymnastics pattern
The pattern was featured in Finland's 2025 maternity package.
In the design, blueberry branches wood sorrel, and other forest plants jiggle away as these bunnies show off their gymnastic skills. The idea for these playful little gymnasts came from watching a baby reaching for their toes.
My very first sketch was all about figuring out how many exercising rabbits could fit into one blanket and what kinds of tricks they might be performing.
When I was in my early teens, I had two pet rabbits. Whenever they were allowed to run freely, they would make all sorts of jumps, twists, and stretches. I never actually saw a rabbit do a somersault, but who knows, perhaps deep in the forest, at bunny gymnastics practice, somersaults are part of the routine!

When working on a computer, every element of a pattern has its own layer. Naming those layers makes it much easier to keep track of everything. The bunny layers ended up being called (loosely translated from Finnish) Dancer Bunny, Leap Bunny, Stretch Bunny, Somersault Bunny, and Toe Bunny (can you guess which one was which?).
I also added small details, including blueberry branches, wood sorrel, and other familiar plants from the Finnish forest.
I designed the pattern specifically for a woven blanket, so its scale, composition, and line weight were carefully planned from the very beginning to work well with the weaving process.
The cotton jacquard blankets are woven by Barker Textiles in Lithuania. The pattern appears on both sides of the blanket. On the reverse side, it becomes a mirror image with the colors inverted.
That means the blanket can be used from either side. Fortunately, that doesn't bother these talented gymnastic bunnies at all. They seem perfectly comfortable performing their tricks from any direction!
The design project was through Patternsfrom Agency for Barker Textiles.
