Beautiful café Tyyne

I’ve known my friend Salla since the later years of elementary school. She moved to Lammi from Hämeenkoski, which was closer to Lahti, and that already made her seem interesting and a bit trendier in our eyes. Over the years, my perspective on these things has naturally shifted, but Salla’s sense of style still holds strong.

This spring, Salla opened a charming café called Kahvila Tyyne and an event venue Tyynelä, in Kangasala, together with her fellow entrepreneurs Manta and Nina. They’re located in the historic Wikholm Villa and the former Ilkko training center. The buildings had stood empty for quite some time before being brought back to life.

The over-hundred-year-old Jugend-style villa has been carefully renovated into a cozy café and a small gift shop. The interior beautifully blends old and new, details from different decades live side by side. The villa sits on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Pitkäjärvi, and the views are simply breathtaking.

The villa and the old training center are connected, and the café’s kitchen operates on the training center side, now known as the event space Tyynelä. The villa’s spacious downstairs hall and a small salon are open to café visitors. On sunny days, there are several lovely spots in the yard to enjoy coffee, homemade treats, or lunch. Upstairs, there are smaller meeting rooms available for reservation, and the Tyynelä side can host events for up to a hundred people.

According to local stories, the villa is haunted by Tyyne, the former head of an old folks’ home that once operated here. One might assume she’s pleased with the building’s new life, as there have been no reports of doors slamming or footsteps echoing on the stairs. Although now and then, a throw blanket or decorative pillow does seem to change position on its own.

I warmly recommend a visit to Tyyne! In August, Kahvila Tyyne is open Tue–Fri from 11 am to 5 pm and Sat–Sun from 11 am to 4 pm. The address is Ilkontie 8–10, Kangasala. You can also find the café and event venue on Instagram @tyynejatyynela.
